NXT Takeover: Brooklyn Results & Thoughts

First off, I want everyone to excuse the caps lock on this. We’ll just say I was excited to type this up!

TRIPLE H OPENS THE SHOW AND ANNOUNCES THAT THIS COMING DECEMBER, NXT WILL BE OVERSEAS.

1-TYLER BREEZE VS JUSHIN THUNDER LIGER

A GREAT OPENER BUT NOTHING I HAVEN’T SEEN BEFORE. THAT’S BECAUSE JTL IS SUCH A LEGEND, MOVES HE PERFORMS HAVE BEEN STOLEN TIME AND TIME AGAIN. SURPRISED JTL GOT THE WIN IF HE’S NOT STICKING AROUND. ON A SIDE NOTE, THE “FULL SAIL SUCKS” CHANTS WERE COOL AS WELL AS SCOTT HALL, KEVIN NASH AND SEAN WALTMAN SITTING FRONT ROW.

WINNER- JUSHIN ‘THUNDER’ LIGER

2-BLAKE & MURPHY VS VAUDEVILLAINS

REALLY DIDN’T CARE FOR THIS MATCH GOING IN. I DO LIKE THE VAUDEVILLAINS GIMMICK THOUGH. WITH THE ADDITION OF BLUEPANTS IN THEIR CORNER, THEY BECAME FACES AS WELL AS NEW NXT CHAMPIONS. I NEVER SAW THE APPEAL OF BLAKE & MURPHY. THE ONLY THING I ENJOY FROM THEM IS SEEING ALEXA BLISS COMING OUT WITH THEM, ESPECIALLY IN THOSE BOOTY SHORTS SHE WAS WEARING. AND WHAT THE HECK IS UP WITH THOSE IRON MAN LOOKING TIGHTS THEY HAD ON? THE “BLUEPANTS CITY” CHANT WAS COOL.

WINNERS-THE VAUDVILLAINS (NEW NXT TAG CHAMPS)

RICK RUBIN IS IN THE FRONT ROW!

3-TYE DILLENGER VS APOLLO CREWS

ANYONE ELSE THINK TYE LOOKS LIKE A WHITE VERSION OF DIP SET MEMBER, JIM JONES? UHAA NATION, MAKES HIS NXT DEBUT AS APOLLO CREWS. LOTS OF HYPE AROUND THAT GUY. LOOKS LIKE A SMALLER VERSION OF EZEKIEL JACKSON MIXED WITH A LITTLE BIT OF BOBBY LASHLEY. LOVING THE UHHA CHANTS. VERY AGILE BIG MAN. STANDING MOONSAULT FINISHER IS PRETTY COOL FOR A MAN HIS SIZE. IT’S IMPRESSIVE NONTHELESS. NEEDS TO WORK ON TIMING A BIT. WHEN HE TRIED TO PRESS SLAM TYE, YOU CAN SEE HE WAS WAITING FOR TYE TO GET INTO POSITION.

WINNER-APOLLO CREWS

WILLIAM REGAL ANNOUNCES DUSTY RHODES TAG TEAM INVITATIONAL STARTING SEPTEMBER 2ND!

TOUGH ENOUGH FINALISTS IN ATTENDANCE. WHO CARES? NO ONE WATCHES THE SHOW.

4-SAMOA JOE VS BARON CORBIN

GOING IN TO THIS MATCH, I HAD NO IDEA WHO WOULD OR SHOULD COME OUT WITH THE WIN. I’M A FAN OF BOTH. VERY GLAD THEY FINALLY CHANGED JOE’S ENTRANCE MUSIC. THAT OTHER TUNE HE HAD REALLY DIDN’T FIT. CORBIN NEEDS A BIGGER PAIR OF TIGHTS. LOOKS LIKE HE’S SAGGING SKINNY SPANDEX. JOE TURNS A PIN ATTEMPT INTO A HALF CRAB AND THEN INTO A CROSSFACE. STRETCHING THE ARM BACK LOOKS SUPER PAINFUL. THE CAMERA ANGLE FROM CORBIN PUTTING JOE IN THAT LEG LOCK WAS BAD AS IT DIDN’T LOOK PAINFUL. IT LOOKED LIKE A SITDOWN ANKLE LOCK. SICK CHOKESLAM FROM CORBIN INTO A PIN INTO A SLEEPER BY JOE. BOOM. JOE TAKES IT. DEFENITLY A BATTLE. GREAT MATCH. WOULDN’T MIND SEEING THIS FIGHT AGAIN.

WINNER-SAMOA JOE

KANNA, RIC FLAIR AND SGT. SLAUGHTER ARE IN ATTENDANCE ALONG WITH TEAM B.A.D. KANNA IS A ‘WORLD RENOWED FEMALE WRESTLER’. VERY EASY ON THE EYES AS WELL.

OUT COMES STEPHANIE MCMAHON. TRILPE H CHOSE RIGHT, LOL. SHE LOOKED COLD. SHE INTRODUCES THE CO-MAIN EVENT OF THE NIGHT; THE NXT WOMENS BOUT!

5-SASHA BANKS VS BAYLEY

NOTICE HOW NXT LADIES ARE REFFERED TO AS WOMEN, WHEREAS THE MAIN ROSTER ARE REFFERED TO DIVAS? NEVER CAUGHT THAT BEFORE. BAYLEY IS SUPER FUN. SHE REPRESENTS ALL THE PURE INNOCENCE AND EXCITEMENT THAT EMBODIES WHAT WWF/E MEANT TO ME AS A CHILD. SHE CAN BE THE FEMALE JOHN CENA IF POSTIONED THE RIGHT WAY BUT I’D BE LIYING IF I SAID I WANTED SASHA TO LOSE. NO SECRET I LOVE ME SOME BANKS. BAYLEYS ARM TASSLES LOOK LIKE MACHO MANS ALONG WITH HER YELLOW POLKADOTS AS A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE DUSTY RHODES. WITH ALL THE HYPE AND PROMO GOING INTO THIS MATCH, IT’D BE HARD TO BELIEVE THAT SASHA RETAINS, ESPECIALLY WITH HER BEING ON THE MAIN ROSTER. SASHA’S ENTRANCE FITS HER VERY WELL. BAYLEY STARTS THE MATCH VERY AGGRESSIVLEY. VERY BACK AND FORTH MATCH. THE DOUBLE KNEES FROM THE TOP ROPE WAS A NICE SPOT BY BANKS. WITH THE BACK AND FORTH, ITS HARD TO DETERMINE EXACTLY WHO’LL WALK AWAY THE WINNER AS FAR AS THE PHYSICALITY IS CONCERNED. SASHA GOES THE SUPER HEEL ROUTE AND REMOVES THE TAPE FROM BAYLEYS INJURED WRIST WHICH MAKES BAYLEY LOOK EVEN MORE LIKE THE UNDERDOG WHO WON’T WIN. THE SPOT WITH BAYLEYS HAND BEING SMAHED BETWEEN THE STEPS AND RING APRON WAS GREAT! I FOUND MYSELF CLAPPING TO AN EMPTY ROOM AS SASHA DID THAT CRAZY FLIP DIVE OVER THE REF ONTO THE OUTSIDE TO LAND ON BAYLEY. IMMEDITALEY, THE “THIS IS AWESOME” CHANTS BEGIN AND RIGHTFULLY SO. WHAT A SEQUENCE WITH SASHA PUTTING BAYLEY IN THE BANK STATEMENT WITH THE AGGRESSIVNESS OF STOMPING THE INJURED HAND AS WELL JUST FOR BAYLEY TO REVERSE IT! SASHA SHOVING BAYLEY OFF FROM THE TOP ROPE AS BAYLEY ATTEMPTED A BAYLEY TO BELLY SUPLEX AND WATCHING BAYLEY LAND WAS JUST WICKED! WITH THAT CRAZY FINISH OF BAYLEY HITTING HER BAYLEY TO BELLY AND FINALLY WINNING THE BIG ONE MAKES THIS MATCH THE BEST OF THE NIGHT SO FAR! LOVE HOW WWE LET BECKY, CHARLETTE AND SASHA REP THEIR 4 HOURSEWOMEN FACTION AT THE END OF THE MATCH WHICH SEEMED TO MAKE SASHA LOOK LIKE A FACE…ANYWAY, CONGRATS BAYLEY!

SETH ROLLINS (& GIRLFRIEND, POSSIBLY THE WOMAN THAT WAS INVOLVED IN THE NUDE PHOTO SITUATION EARLIER THIS YEAR) ARE SHOWN AT RINGSIDE. ALL GUESTS SHOWN ARE ALL SITTING FRONT ROW.

6-FINN BALOR VS KEVIN OWENS

GOING INTO THIS, IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT OWENS WILL WIN THE BELT BACK AFTER THE RECEPTION AND PRAISE BALOR HAS RECEIVED SINCE BECOMING CHAMP. ALSO, OWENS IS ON THE MAIN ROSTER SO I CAN’T SEE HIM GETTING IT BACK. I WONDER HOW OWENS WILL DO AGAINST CESARO AFTER COMPETING JUST 24 HOURS PRIOR IN THIS LADDER MATCH. GOING IN, I’D LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT I AM A HUGE FAN OF NOT ONLY BOTH OF THESE COMPETITORS BUT OF THEIR THEME MUSIC AS WELL. TOTALLY DUG THE MULTIPLE BALOR’S AT THE BEGINNING OF HIS ENTRANCE! LOVED HOW OWENS SEEMES TO HAVE PUNKED COREY GRAVES OUT OF HIS CHAIR. OWENS USING THE LADDER AGAINST BALOR TO PIN HIM AGAINST THE OUTSIDE OF THE RING LOOKED PAINFUL, ESPECIALLY THAT STAIGHT RIGHT PUNCH TO THE FACE. DURING THE OUTSIDE SCUFFLE, BOTH MEN DID A GREAT JOB OF MAKING IT ALL SEEM SO BRUTALLY PHYSICAL. GOTTA LOVE THOSE “HOLY SHIT” CROWD CHANTS. THE BACK BODY DROP BY BALOR TO OWENS ONTO THE LADDER LOOKED SICK, AND THEN OWENS TRIES A CORNER CANNONBALL BUT INSTEAD FINDS A LADDER TO THE BACK YET AGAIN! BALOR THEN PERFORMS A COUP DE GRAS AND STARTS TO ASCEND THE LADDER. OWENS COMES TO AND YANKS BALOR OFF THE LADDER INTO A POWERBOMB! OWENS THEN TRIES TO CLIMB THE LADDER BUT FINN LIFTS THE BOTTOM OF THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE LADDER SENDING OWENS CRASHING INTO THE CORNER. AFTER A LITTLE BACK AND FORTH, OWENS ENDS UP HITTING BALOR WITH HIS POP-UP POWERBOMB INTO THE RING APRON. OWENS THEN STARTS TO CLIMB THE LADDER AS BALOR RUNS BACK IN AND TRIES TO PREVENT OWENS CLIMBING SO OWENS RETURNS THE FAVOR BY HITTING A SUPER KICK FOLLOWED BY A SECOND! OWENS THEN SETS UP 2 LADDERS. ONE UNDER THE BELT AND THE OTHER BETWEEN THE BOTTOM CORNER AND THE BOTTOM RUNG OF THE FIRST LADDER WITH THE INTENTION OF HITTING A SUPLEX ON BALOR FROM THE TOP OF THE LADDER BUT BALOR MANAGES TO FIGHT OUT OF IT AND SEND OWENS FALLING BACK ONTO IT. OWENS’ HEAD SNAPS BACK PRETTY HARD. HE ENDS UP ROLLING AROUND AND THEN BALOR PROCEEDS TO HIT A COUP DE GRAS FROM THE TOP OF THE LADDER ON OWENS. VERY BRUTAL LOOKING. ALL THAT’S LEFT IS FOR BALOR TO CLIMB THE LADDER AND GRAB THE NXT BELT, WHICH HE DOES AND BOOM! FINN RETAINS! HELL OF A MATCH! FINN CELEBRATES ATOP THE LADDER.

WINNER-FINN BALOR

Batman #23.3
(DC Comics $2.99/$3.99 3D Sept. 18, 2013)

Starting to feel like a broken record here, man am I glad this month is almost over. This issue brings us Penguin, now I have never really been a fan of him (loved Burgess Meredith as Penguin form the ’66 Batman TV show) and nothing here changes that. As has been the par for Villains month Penguin gets a New 52 origin and a tie in to Forever Evil. Really nothing worth talking about here bar one exception his set up up the mayor (Spoiler Alert!!). Drugging a man that was your friend and framing him for murder is hardcore. Then when he goes on TV and commits suicide, it just goes to the next level. Best stuff in the issue, otherwise kinda boring. Penguin kills some guys who were ripping off his casino yada yada yada. The issue was just ok, and that has been a problem for quite a few of these issues. If you are going to do a villains month, then make those villains really shine, don’t put out mediocre issues that just suck. Not a big fan of this one so I can not in good conscience recommend it to any one.

Wonder Woman #23.1
(DC Comics $2.99/$3.99 3D Sept. 18, 2013)

Written by John Ostrander
Art by Victor Ibanez

Man, I was starting to lose faith but finally a good villains month issue. Cheetah is the star of the first point issue for Wonder Woman. The issue starts out shortly after the attack on Belle Reve, and is also a bit of an origin story. Ostrander gives us an excellent look into who Cheetah is and what makes her tick and Ibanez’s art was a perfect fit for this issue. The ending leaves us with a lead to future issues of Forever Evil. Wonder Woman has been one of my favorite New 52 titles and I am happy to see that even without the normal team in place we still get a solid book. Fans of Wonder Woman and Cheetah this book is a must.

Superman #23.3
(DC Comics $2.99/$3.99 3D Sept. 18, 2013)

Written by Scott Lobdell
Art by Dan Jurgens

I should have known this would be bad, hell Lobdell wrote it and that says a lot. I have not been a fan of the New 52 Superman, I read issues 1-7 and was out. I often wondered if the H’El storyline was any good, I think I got my answer here. It started out ok, the art was solid but then the story took a sharp left into absurdity. I am all for new characters but lets not piss all over the past (literally), but (Spoiler Alert) how can you kill Superman’s father before he launches baby Kal into space? Can you say Paradox. Yeah this ones a stinker and dropping DC’s villains month batting average. The art was fine but the story was craptatsic. Thanks for renewing my belief that the Superman title and Scott Lobdell still suck.

Well I really didn’t expect much from this as I am not a fan of Dial H. The main focus of this issue is Dial E, not sure what they were going for here. This issue was just weird and confusing, it didn’t really give you any kind of back story on the E Dial. It is just a strange concept executed in a very weird way. Not a fan at all, I guess if you liked Dial H you would enjoy this. I was not a fan of Dial H (made me feel like I may have an aneurism) so obviously this was not my cup o tea. I really have nothing good to say about this issue, it seemed unnecessary. A concept better left undone, I could think of a few JL villains that deserve a spotlight and the chose Dial E. Way to go DC……Epic Fail!!!!

Justice League Dark #23.3
(DC Comics $2.99/$3.99 3D Sept. 18, 2013)

Written by Dan Didio
Art by Philip Tan

Eclipso returns in this issue and it was a mediocre come back. Not a horrible issue, the writing was ok (Funny seems Didio can write ok but runs a company for shit), loved Tan’s artwork. Eclipso gets a new host in this issue, maybe his first in the New 52 (don’t quote me on that). I know the Black Diamond has shown up here and there but I am not sure Eclipso has. No tie in to anything here, nor was it an origin of Eclipso. More or less it was just an intro to the new host and some self mutilation. Definitely a middle of the road book with no next appearance for the character in sight. Can’t in good conscience recommend this one, I leave it in your hands. Purchase at you own risk, I know I wouldn’t.

Pleasantly surprised by this one since I had expected it to suck. Shadow Thief takes the main stage in this issue and it was actually enjoyable. Not knowing much about Shadow Thief probably helped. I know he was previously a man (some of that good old DC diversity at work) and a Hawkman villain but that’s about it. This may be a case of low expectations so keep that in mind. All origin and set up here, it starts out in the middle of the story and brings you back to the beginning and then full circle. I really think I liked it because the character is unknown to me and ’cause of that I did not expect much. So kiddies if you are a fan of the character check it out, story was solid and the art was alright, if not spend you money on something else of higher quality

Detective Comics #23.3
(DC Comics $2.99/$3.99 3D Sept. 18, 2013)

Written by Peter J. Tomasi
Art by Szymon Kudranski

Oh boy, A lead in to a mini series…..lame. Would have been satisfied with a origin but this is something else. Scarecrow has drank the kool-aid and is going around attempting to recruit the rest of Batman’s rouges in preparation for a war, an “Arkham War”. According to Scarecrow Blackgates former residents (lead by Bane) are planning on going to war with the big guns from Arkham. Scarecrow spends the entire issue talking with the likes of Mr. Freeze, Riddler, Killer Croc and Poison Ivy. This is all leading into the forth coming Arkham War. Not sure how I feel about that ’cause Batman’s rouges are some of my favorite villains. Hopefully it will be good and not just some useless trash. IMO DC usually handles tie ins well, we shall have to wait and see on this one. Didn’t care for the art in this issue and I hated how Scarecrow looked. Tomasi’s story was ok, I just wanted something more. I guess you can’t win them all. Was never a big Scarecrow fan and this issue changed nothing. If you are planning on reading Arkham War pick this up as it is all set up for the upcoming mini, otherwise I’d say save your money and buy something else.

Superior Carnage #3
(Marvel Comics $3.99 Sept 18, 2013)

Three issues in and finally we get some Superior Carnage, wtf took so long. I mean I’m familiar with the slow burn but jeez, ya only got 6 issues dude hurry up a bit huh. So The Wizard (who is bat shit crazy thanks to Black Bolt(See issue #7 of FF)) has finally created his Superior Carnage. At first I was all like “Cool!” and then he did the costume change and I was like “NO!”. I didn’t know what to expect but Superior Carnage seems more like Venom Red. And Klaw, what friggin rock did that guy climb out from under. So far this series is ok, it’s not great by any means. I personally expected a lot more from it than what was given, was thinking we would get Superior Spider-Man’s first real challenge. Really with three issues left that remaining I guess something could go down to make me change my mind. If you like Superior Spider-Man and Carnage pick this up but at this point I gotta tell ya not to expect to much (although the Wizard has made me chuckle here and there)

Written by James Tyrion

Tyrion never fails me, this was a great story. Ra’s Al Ghul gets an update here and it was about time. Having only made a cameo appearance so far in the New 52, it was beyond time to bring him in. There’s a little bit of origin and a tie into Forever Evil in this issue. All of the past events of Batman and Batman Inc were woven into the tapestry. Was cool seeing the myth of Ra’s built up over time, and his eff you to the Secret Society. Ra’s hand in shown in many moments of history, from dealing with the Knights during the Crusades to selling opium with the East India company. There was a lot to like about this issue, from the art to the story it was all solid. This ones a keeper, The Demon’s Head is back!
